Preparing For Your Newborn Photography Session
Bringing your newborn to their first professional photography session should be an exciting and relaxing experience. With just a little preparation, your baby is much more likely to stay sleepy, comfortable, and content throughout the session. After photographing hundreds of newborns for families throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, and surrounding areas, I’ve found these simple tips make a huge difference.

Feed Your Baby Just Before the Session
A full tummy helps babies feel relaxed and sleepy. If possible, try to feed your baby immediately before leaving home or once you arrive at the studio. Don’t worry if your baby needs extra feeding breaks during the session—newborn photography is always baby-led, and plenty of time is built into every appointment.
Dress Your Baby In Loose, Easy-To-Remove Clothing
Avoid tight socks, fitted sleepers, or clothing with elastic waistbands that can leave marks on your baby’s delicate skin. A loose zip-up sleeper or a simple swaddle makes it much easier to transition your newborn into beautiful poses while keeping them comfortable.
Keep Baby Awake For A Short Time Before Your Appointment
If your baby can stay awake for 30 to 60 minutes before your session, they’re often sleepier once photography begins. A warm bath, diaper change, or simply talking to your baby during the drive can help without causing unnecessary stress.
Bring The Essentials
Please bring extra diapers, wipes, bottles if bottle-feeding, pacifiers (even if your baby rarely uses one), and an extra outfit for both baby and yourself. Accidents happen during newborn sessions, and being prepared keeps everyone relaxed.
Keep The Studio Warm
Newborn photography is typically done in a warm room, so babies stay comfortable while being safely posed. Parents often comment that the studio feels warm, so dressing in light, comfortable clothing is a great idea.
Relax And Enjoy The Experience
Babies can often sense when parents are anxious. Don’t worry if your little one needs cuddles, feeding breaks, or extra soothing. Every newborn session moves at your baby’s pace, and my priority is always your baby’s comfort and safety while creating timeless images your family will treasure for generations.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?
The ideal time to reserve your newborn photography session is during your second trimester. Your due date is placed on my calendar, and once your baby arrives, we’ll schedule your session—typically within the first two weeks after birth when babies are naturally sleepiest.
