A newborn photoshoot: what to expect
Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your little one! A newborn photoshoot is a special way to capture your baby’s early moments. Here’s what to expect during a typical newborn photoshoot:
Preparation
1. Booking: Schedule a photoshoot when you find a photographer you like! A baby’s weight is more important to me than a baby’s age! They are still flexible after 2 weeks of development! Don’t be fooled into thinking that shots must be done in the first two weeks!
2. Communication: Discuss your preferences, expectations, and any specific ideas you have with the photographer. Be sure to let your photographer know before the shoot if you have seen some images that you would like them to replicate for you!
3. Preparation tips: As a newborn photographer, I send out a preparation guide to help my clients be fully prepared for the shoot. Most newborn photographers offer this as it helps us do our job! We always want a happy family and a sleepy baby—a stress-free shoot to enjoy!
The photoshoot
1. Duration: Newborn photoshoots typically last 2-4 hours, depending on the photographer and the number of poses and setups. Of course, we will stop if baby needs to eat, takes a small break or needs some cuddles from mom and dad.
2. Studio or home setting: Newborn shoots may take place in a studio or at your home, depending on the photographer’s preferences and your comfort level. I am a photographer who shoots in my studio. I like having access to all my props, knowing my heating and lighting, which are all essential to a successful shoot. Typically, a studio shoot is different from a lifestyle shoot done in your home.
3. Posing and setup: A newborn photographer will gently pose your baby in various positions, using props and backdrops to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It is always helpful to have a variety of colors, textures, baskets, buckets, hats, wraps, headbands, and more!
4. Safety first: It is so important that you are comfortable handing over your baby to a photographer. With me, I want you to feel comfortable with me handling your baby. I understand how difficult it is to hand your baby over to an excited family member, so trusting someone you don’t know is critical. I want my clients to feel like their babies are safe at all times.
5. Family involvement: You and your partner may be included in some photos, and of course, your siblings. I will even allow your furry or furry legacy members of the family to join the session!
What to Bring:
1. Baby essentials: Diapers, formula, bottles, pacifiers, and a baby with a full tummy!
2. Comfort items: A favorite toy or blanket if you have a sibling. And then wear your comfortable clothes. THE STUDIO WILL BE VERY WARM. YOU CAN ALWAYS CHANGE INTO LOCKS AT THE TIME OF THE “FAMILY” PART OF
3. Personal items: Any special items you’d like to include in the photos, such as a family heirloom or a personalized blanket.
4. Snacks and drinks: For you and your partner to keep your energy levels up during the shoot. You are always welcome to nap! Often, parents do this 🙂
After the photoshoot:
1. Editing and post-processing: The photographer will edit and enhance the images, removing any blemishes or imperfections.
2. Image delivery: You’ll receive a selection of edited images, eith
