The Equipment I Use For A Newborn Shoot.

What Equipment do I use for a newborn Photo Shoot?

I will Start with the stuff I can carry around easily!

Cameras, Canon 5D MKIII

I have to say I absolutely love this camera! By far my favorite and I do not plan on changing it anytime soon! I started out with a Panasonic Lumix about 10 years ago. It was a great camera and even today I will still bring it out to play around with. I then switched to a Canon 40D. I believe once you hold a camera in your hand, be it Canon, Nikon or any other brand out there then you really get a feel for what feels good in your hand. For me it was Canon and I stuck with it. I then bought my Canon 5D MKIII and it has just been terrific to me. Canon has a former version of this ; Canon 5D MKII  I also own one of these for back up. We always need a back up, just in case! You just never know and I don’t want a camera to malfunction during a shoot! That would not be good at all!

Lenses!

OK, so I am the first to say, I am quite the lens hoarder. I just can’t seem to get rid of them. I love them. Each has their use and in newborn photography these are the ones I use the most! These would be my “go-to” lenses in the studio any time I am really in the studio. Preferably I like the L series of Canon lenses. This “glass” is said to be better and has a faster focus ability. A must have when you are photographing newborns. They cost is a little higher but to me totally worth the extra. With that said, I did recently purchase a Sigma 35 mm lens. It is a Sigma Art and has amazing quality and came with great reviews so of course I wanted to try it out! Why not, and I love it!! This is the main lens I use. For all my bean bag posing and for the prop posing too. It is very sharp and I have zero regrets on buying it. LOVE it!

I also have the Canon 24-70L 2.8 lens. That is a lot of jargon that really may be confusing to you! The distance range is the 24-70 (This is called a zoom lens as it moves distances) The Sigma named above is a prime lens it doesn’t change from 35mm. Making me the zoom, I want to be closer I walk closer, same as backing up.

Prime lenses are known to be a little more sharp than the zoom lens.  I will use this when photographing sibling shots and parent shots. This allows me to move without moving in a time restricted environment. Anyone who has tried to capture siblings together, be it on the cell phone or studio, you know what I mean 😉

Next I always have my 100mm Macro lens. These are the lenses that make really small things look really big :). Macro photography is a photography genre all of its own and it is fascinating. I absolutely love it! This is the lens I use to get those up close shots.
